Spreemo Health’s Chief Radiologist Invited to Speak at Leading Radiological Symposium

Two lectures to highlight importance of provider quality, value-based healthcare

SAN DIEGO (February 23, 2017)—Richard Herzog, MD, Director of Spinal Imaging at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and Executive Director of Spreemo Health’s Quality Research Institute, will deliver two invited lectures at the 2017 Annual Symposium of the American Society of Spine Radiology (ASSR).

Dr. Herzog was invited to speak by ASSR President Joshua Hirsch, MD, Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School, Director of Interventional Neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a former fellow of Dr. Herzog’s at the University of Pennsylvania. At Dr. Hirsch’s request, Dr. Herzog will deliver a special lecture titled “Spine MRI: A Musculoskeletal Radiologist’s Perspective.”

In a different session, Dr. Herzog will give a talk titled “Variability and Diagnostic Errors in Spinal MRI Imaging,” recapping the findings of his recently published clinical study in The Spine Journal—which revealed diagnostic error rates up to 43%—and connecting those findings to patient care.

“Conferences like this one are critically important,” said Dr. Herzog, “to address the challenges of diagnostic errors and inter-provider variability as well as to emphasize the importance of shifting from cost-centric to value-based healthcare. By focusing first on quality instead of solely on near-term unit costs, Spreemo Health is truly improving patient care while realizing downstream savings. I look forward to sharing with other top minds in the field the work we do at Spreemo Health every day, raising standards of quality around the country.”

At Spreemo Health, Dr. Herzog leads the clinical team focused on developing metrics and methodologies to assess, predict, and improve the quality of diagnostic imaging nationwide. In recognition of his contributions to the field, Dr. Herzog has also been invited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) to serve on the Collaborative Committee to revise the ACR Practice Parameter for the Performance of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the Adult Spine.

The ASSR Symposium, to be held in San Diego from February 23–26, 2017, is expected to draw hundreds of leading clinicians and scientists from around the U.S. to discuss and advance the fields of spinal imaging and intervention. Schedules and registration information can be found on the ASSR website.

Spreemo Health, ranked among North America’s fastest-growing companies in 2015 and 2016, works with a rapidly expanding portfolio of Fortune 100 companies to connect clients covering tens of millions of patients with the highest-quality radiology providers nationwide. To better identify those providers, Spreemo Health founded the Quality Research Institute to lead the development of an objective, data-driven understanding of the emerging science of quality.
